Whenever I decide to take up a new craft, I learn largely by doing. I tend to jump right in and learn as I go, and I consult a few key resources along the way. Before I knew what I was doing with my sewing machine, I acquired the book “Last Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts.” This was a very smart purchase, and I read it through a few times– especially the general sewing instructions in the beginning of the book. A lot of it didn’t make sense to me until I started to actually do things on my own, though.
Next I fell in love (as so many others have) with the quilts of Denyse Schmidt. I got her book, “Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects” last winter. I loved all of the projects in her book, and I especially loved how modern and updated the quilts were. Before I learned to recognize fabric designers by name, I had trouble finding quilts and quilt patterns that were so appealing to me. I’m not a huge fan of the really traditional prints paired with a traditional pattern. I wanted colors and shapes that had interest and movement, and I wanted to really love the quilts I set out to make. Finding Denyse’s book made me feel like this was a real possibility!
Last, I quickly became enthralled with the world of quilt-blogging. *This* was where I was finding daily inspiration and many modern quilts to aspire to make. In particular, I began reading Crazy Mom Quilts on a regular basis, and utilized her tutorials to learn to bind my quilts (these were so, so much clearer to me than any other instructions I read– in large part because of the pictures included). I read about free motion quilting (which sounded kind of crazy, and a little dangerous to me at first!). I learned how to piece a zig-zag quilt without using triangles (the idea of sewing triangles kind of freaked me out). I found my way to many other amazing blogs, from whom I have purchased patterns, read instructions, and have generally been really inspired to continue developing my sewing skills.
Finally, I have come to love flickr and all it can offer in the way of connecting people and sharing amazing photos. I am hoping that in time, I can offer others the same instruction and inspiration I have found in my journeys on the internet!
