I’ve been dreaming of making an all voile quilt for a while now, especially since I have been sitting on a stack of gorgeous Anna Maria Horner voile. For the longest time I mulled over what would be the best pattern for this quilt, and it occurred to me last weekend– with fabric this gorgeous, I want to just highlight the prints and colors, and a simple patchwork would be best.
As soon as I decided on this, I got to ironing and cutting my fabric, and within a couple of days I had this pulled together!
Now the big questions are– should I back it with voile, or with flannel? All voile front and back would be so luxurious, though the flannel/voile combo is soft and cozy! Also, hand quilt or machine quilt?? I love the idea of using perle cotton in different colors and using running stitches along the length of the quilt, though machine quilting would be so sturdy and fast.
What would you do? Flannel or voile back? Hand or machine quilted? Help me decide!

flannel and hand quilting, definitely. It’s so lovely!!
Oh my goodness, this is awesome. Personally, I would probably hand quilt it just so that I could snuggle under the soft voile while quilting it.
Flannel/Hand quilted. When I look at the snow outside voile/voile just doesn’t seem warm enough!
Flannel and machine!
I would say flannel because all that voile together might be too slippery! And I haven’t hand quilted much (I’m too impatient!) but it would be really pretty either way!
One more thing – how much fabric did it take to create this and what is the size of the quilt top? I just got a bundle of Little Folks and I’m wondering how far it will go! Thanks!
SO gorgeous Natalie! I traded a bunch of my voile (err… most of it) for FFA I – not sure if that was the greatest idea now. I would back it in flannel (folksy flannel of course – there’s still a bucn of it at the Fabric Place in Natick for $7 per yard) so that you would enjoy the two textures. Hope to see you at the meeting tomorrow!
Hand quilted with a voile back, now that would be luxurious!
I vote for a voile back and hand quilting!
Flannel back for sure. And, I have no patience for handwork, so I would machine quilt it. But, I think hand-quilting would be stunning. Excellent finish, Natalie…it’s gorgeous!
Inspires me to get back in my sewing room to finish a t-shirt quilt for a friend! I love your simple block pattern. It does highlight the art in the material print. Take care, Anna
This is a really gorgeous quilt top! Congratulations
I could happily look at and stroke this all day!
Wow, I love the colours! I’d go with flannel back.
So dreamy! My vote is flannel for the back and maybe a combination of both machine and hand quilting. Great start, Natalie!
Flannel for the back, Voile for the binding, so you have the soft feel along the edge but the coziness of flannel. I would machine quilt in one of the thicker Aurifil. I’ve heard the 12 works in a machine with a large needle. I’ve wanted to try it and think this design would be perfect for it. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you decide.
Definitely flannel and hand quilting! The perle cotton would be gorgeous!
Mmmm…hard choice. I think voile backing, with wool batting (so it can be used in the warmer months). Hand quilting, just for the joy of handling it.
Your quilt is just stunning! I love all the colors. Flannel backing sounds good but I have only machine quilted so far and never hand quilted. So, I would opt for machine quilting.
Some day I will have try hand quilting it sounds so much more fun.
Another request for size and fabric quantity, I have quite a bit stashed away for this exact quilt! Lovely!
This looks amazing! I think I would back it would be lovely and warm with a flannel backing!
Flannel or minky on the back. It will be hard to baste, so hand quilting might be best! Love me some AMH patchwork
Hmm. I think flannel would be a more fun backing, especially since you actually have winter weather! If it were me, I’d machine quilt, but hand quilting would be gorgeous! I don’t think you can make a bad decision here!
i say flannel backing is the way to go. it is gorgeous and i would probably machine quilt because i would want to use it and it takes FOREVER to hand quilt.
Oo, I think flannel and hand-quilting would be lovely if you have the patience.
I made a simple voile and velvet quilt .. machine quilted. The voile quilts up very nicely. Love your voile patchwork!
I am a brand new follower and just had to comment on this since I have been collecting AMH voile for awhile now too. I would use the flannel. It would be so wonderfully soft and cozy. Machine quilting is also the way to go. The stitches are so much more sturdy than hand quilting and it will be much faster to complete. I’m just impatient though!
You could always machine quilt it and then add a few rows of your perle hand quilting to give it some character. Good luck! Either way it will be beautiful.
I love the voile quilt I made, its now on my daughter’s cot and looks so bright and cheerful!
