A little while ago, a friend sent me this news story about quilting. There are a number of things I love about this story– I love the idea of truckers thinking about quilting patterns while on the road, and piecing their quilt tops during their stopovers. I also love the way gender is being subverted– it’s pretty unexpected for men who are employed in a traditionally masculine profession to be engaging in a hobby that definitely has been cast as traditionally feminine. Plus, I think this speaks to the benefits of making something with your hands, which can apply to anyone.
What I love the most, though, is that now, when I pass a trucker on the highway, I always imagine that he might have a little sewing nook up there in his cab, with stacks of fabric and a sewing machine, waiting for the next stop.
